Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra

An orchestra
with a city
inside it.

The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra grew from the Palestine Broadcasting Service Orchestra of the late 1930s and developed into one of Israel’s leading classical music institutions.

Its repertoire reaches from Baroque and Classical music through the Romantic era to contemporary works, with a continuing commitment to Israeli composers and new music.

Jerusalem is not merely where the orchestra performs. It is the historic, cultural and human source of its voice.

Not an archive.
A continuum.

1936

Jerusalem Calling

Music was part of the first Palestine Broadcasting Service transmission from Jerusalem.

1938

The orchestra takes shape

The broadcasting ensemble was reorganised into the orchestra from which today’s JSO developed.

1964

Stravinsky in Jerusalem

A landmark chapter in the orchestra’s long relationship with major international composers.

1999

Seven Gates

Jerusalem continues to inspire major works, premieres and artistic encounters.

Today

Tradition in motion

A Jerusalem institution with international reach, educational activity and a growing digital presence.

One city.
Many voices.

The visual system is designed to work equally across Hebrew, English, Arabic and Russian as equal parts of one cultural identity.
